Why Understanding FBA Fees Matters

New sellers routinely underestimate Amazon's fees and end up with zero-margin products. Understanding the full fee stack before sourcing prevents:

  • Listing products that can't be profitable
  • Pricing below true cost
  • Surprises at Q4 when long-term storage kicks in

This guide covers every fee Amazon charges FBA sellers in 2026.

The Core Fees

1. Fulfillment Fee (FBA pick, pack, ship)

Amazon charges per unit shipped. Varies by size and weight.

2026 rates (US Standard):
  • Small standard (<1 lb): $3.06-3.27
  • Large standard (1-3 lb): $4.89-5.88
  • Large standard (3-20 lb): $6.01 + $0.42/lb above 4 lb
  • Oversize small (<70 lb): $9.39-13.30
  • Oversize medium: $15.01 + variable
  • Oversize large: $20.59 + variable
  • Oversize special: $159.90 + variable

Size tier determined by longest side + median side + shortest side + weight. Misclassification happens ~2-3% of time; Claim Pilot catches these.

2. Referral Fee

Amazon's percentage cut of each sale. Varies by category:

  • Electronics: 8-15% (depending on subcategory)
  • Clothing: 17%
  • Beauty: 8% (over $10) / 15% (under $10)
  • Home & Kitchen: 15%
  • Books: 15%
  • Toys: 15%
  • Groceries: 8-15%
  • Jewelry: 5-20%

Most common for private label: 15%.

Applied to: selling price + shipping credit (if applicable).

3. Monthly Storage Fee

Ongoing cost of inventory in FBA warehouses:

Standard size (US):
  • January – September: $0.78/cubic foot/month
  • October – December: $2.40/cubic foot/month (peak season triple)
Oversize:
  • January – September: $0.56/cubic foot/month
  • October – December: $1.40/cubic foot/month

Calculation: daily inventory average × cubic feet × monthly rate.

4. Long-Term Storage (LTS)

Penalty on units stored >365 days:

  • $6.90 per cubic foot, OR
  • $0.15 per unit (whichever is greater)

Applied monthly, on top of regular storage. Add up fast.

5. Returns Processing

  • Clothing/shoes: $2.50 per return
  • Oversize: $5.00+

6. Removal / Disposal

If you want inventory out of FBA:

Removal (sent back to your address):
  • Standard: $0.32-$0.98 per unit (by size)
  • Oversize: $0.64-$3.12
Disposal (Amazon destroys it):
  • Standard: $0.17-$0.53 per unit
  • Oversize: $0.34-$1.59

7. Inbound Placement Fee

Amazon charges for shipping inventory FROM your source TO FBA warehouse, depending on where Amazon wants it placed:

  • Standard: varies by volume, ~$0.20-0.50 per unit
  • Complex multi-fulfillment-center routing incurs more

This fee was new in 2024 and remains controversial among sellers.

8. Aged Inventory Surcharge

Units 271-365 days old:

  • $0.50 per unit monthly

Units 181-270 days:

  • $0.50 per unit monthly (in some categories)

Example Full Cost Breakdown

Monthly storage (avg 60 days)$0.20
Returns allowance (3%)$0.20
Advertising (avg 20% ACoS)$5.00

Same product, peak season (Q4)

Plan inventory to avoid over-stocking Q4.

Rules of Thumb for Pricing

3x landed cost

Old rule. Still good for rough check.

Better rule: Landed × 2.5 as minimum sale price

For a product with $3 landed cost, minimum sellable Amazon price is ~$7.50 (covers FBA fees + referral + modest PPC).

Safety margin rule

For sustainable business: sell price should be at least 4x landed cost so PPC + returns can eat into margin without killing it.

Advertising: The Hidden Fee

PPC (Pay Per Click ads) is not an Amazon "fee" technically but a cost of doing business:

  • New product: 25-40% ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sale) typical
  • Established product: 15-25% ACoS
  • Premium category: 30-50%
  • Low competition niche: 5-15%

Budget 15-25% of revenue on ads for sustainable scale.

LTS Impact Example

You bought 1000 units, sold 500 in year 1. Remaining 500 still in FBA after 12 months.

LTS charge on 500 units × $0.15 = $75/month

Over 6 months (before you decide to remove): $450 just in LTS.

Plus regular storage continued: $0.78 × 500 × your cubic feet = significant additional.

Lesson: Move or remove aged inventory aggressively. Don't let LTS compound.

Brand Registry Unlocks

Registered brands get:

  • Discounted Sponsored Brand ads (versus Sponsored Product ads)
  • A+ Content (no extra fee, but boosts conversion which amortizes fixed costs)
  • Brand Analytics (free, informs ad strategy)

Brand Registry is a one-time $250-1500 trademark cost that pays back through ad efficiency + conversion.

Calculating Before Sourcing

When evaluating a product idea:

  1. Check actual selling price (sort by rank, pick 3-5 competitors)
  2. Determine size tier (measure product + packaging)
  3. Lookup referral category
  4. Estimate FBA fees using Amazon's calculator
  5. Budget PPC at 20-30% of revenue
  6. Subtract estimated landed cost
  7. Check if remainder is >$5/unit

If net profit per unit is <$5, the economics are too tight. Either raise price (may lose sales velocity) or find cheaper landed cost.

Claim Pilot Recovery

FBA reimbursements are essentially fees Amazon charged you incorrectly. [Claim Pilot](/guides/claim-pilot-amazon-refund-workflow) finds and recovers them. Typical recovery: 3-7% of FBA revenue.

For a $1M/year FBA business: $30-70K/year recovered.

Category Fee Exceptions

Jewelry

Referral fee can hit 20%. Also has "jewelry fee" ($0-4 per unit) on some categories.

Beauty & Grocery

Split-rate referral ($10 price breakpoint). Items <$10 get higher %.

Large appliances

Oversize surcharges make sense only for high-price items.

Media (books, DVDs)

$1.35 "closing fee" per sale. Very low margins unless high velocity.

Offset Strategies

Subscribe & Save

Reduces per-unit fees by ~5% but requires consumables fitting subscription.

Small and Light program

For items under $10 retail and under 12 oz: reduced fulfillment fees ($2.16-2.91 per unit). Lower than standard Small.

Multi-Channel Fulfillment

Uses FBA inventory to fulfill Shopify/other channels. Fees are higher per order ($6-12) but only if you use it.

FAQ

Q: Can I negotiate FBA fees as a large seller?

A: Generally no. Fee schedules are fixed. Very large vendors (Vendor Central relationships with Amazon) may negotiate aspects but Seller Central fees are standard.

Q: Do FBA fees change frequently?

A: Annually. Amazon announces rate changes in fall for January 1 implementation. Monitor [changelog](/changelog) for Catalayer tracking + [Amazon's fee announcement page](https://sellercentral.amazon.com/fba-fee-changes) directly.

Q: What's the most common FBA fee mistake new sellers make?

A: Ignoring PPC in cost calculations. Listed products that "should be profitable" but lose money due to $5-8/unit ad spend required for discoverability.
